Build with Natural Language

How to effectively communicate your vision to the AI

Your prompt is your blueprint. The more clearly you communicate, the closer the output matches your vision.

The Blueprint Formula

Structure your prompts with this framework:

“Build a [site type] for [audience] that [primary goal]. Include [key sections]. Style: [visual direction].”

Example:

“Build a portfolio site for a product designer that showcases case studies. Include a hero with headline and CTA, a 3-column project grid with hover effects, an about section, and a contact form. Style: minimal, lots of whitespace, sans-serif typography.”

For more ready-to-use templates, see our Prompt Library.

Be Specific About Structure

Tell Sticklight exactly what sections you need and how they should be organized:

✓ “Add a hero section with a headline on the left and an image on the right”
✓ “Create a 3-column feature grid below the hero”
✓ “Include a testimonial carousel that auto-advances every 5 seconds”

✗ “Make it look nice”
✗ “Add some content”
✗ “Make it modern”

Visual Language Keywords

Use precise terms that translate directly to design decisions:

Layout: grid, masonry, asymmetric, centered, full-bleed, split-screen
Spacing: compact, airy, generous whitespace, tight, breathing room
Typography: bold headlines, lightweight body, all-caps accent, large display type
Effects: subtle shadows, gradient overlays, blur effects, hover animations
Mood: minimal, bold, playful, corporate, editorial, brutalist

You can also establish consistent visual direction by setting up a brand kit before building.

The Senior Dev Approach

Think of Sticklight as a senior developer on your team. You wouldn’t say “make it better” – you’d say:

  • “Increase the hero padding to 120px top and bottom”
  • “Change the grid to 2 columns on tablet and 1 on mobile”
  • “Add a fade-in animation to each feature card on scroll”

Specific requests get specific results.

Real Content Wins

Placeholder text creates placeholder results. When possible:

  • Provide your actual headlines and copy
  • Share your real business name and tagline
  • Include specific calls-to-action
  • Supply actual testimonials or case study details

You can also attach files for context – share brand guidelines, content docs, or reference images.

Understand Before Building

Not sure how something works? Switch to Ask mode to explore your project before making changes. Ask mode is read-only, so you can safely investigate the codebase, trace how features work, and understand the architecture. When you’re ready, switch back to Build mode with a clearer picture of what to change.

Iterative Refinement

You don’t need the perfect prompt upfront. Start with structure, then refine:

  1. First prompt: Establish layout and sections
  2. Second prompt: Adjust spacing and typography
  3. Third prompt: Fine-tune colors and effects
  4. Visual editing: Pixel-perfect adjustments

Keep iterating as long as you need – Smart Conversation Management handles long conversations automatically so you never hit limits.
