File Storage
4 min read
Upload, organize, and manage project assets like images, documents, and files directly in your workspace.
Upload, organize, and manage your project assets directly in Sticklight. The Files tab gives you a complete file management system for images, documents, and other files your project needs.
Who can do this: Owners, Admins, and Editors can upload files and create folders. Only Owners and Admins can delete files and folders. See Roles and Permissions for details.
Before You Start
File Storage requires Cloud Backend. If it’s not enabled yet, you’ll see an empty state. Ask the AI to enable it, or request any feature that needs data storage, and Cloud Backend provisions automatically. See Enable Cloud Backend for details.
Where to Find It
Open your project in Studio and click the Files tab in the top navigation (the document icon). You’ll land on the root view showing your storage overview.
What You’ll See
Overview Screen
The root screen shows:
- Usage summary showing folder count and storage used versus your plan quota
- Storage bar visualizing how much space you’ve used
- Folder cards displaying each folder’s name, visibility (Public or Private), file count, and size
- Search to filter folders by name
- Toolbar with grid/list view toggle, New folder, and Upload buttons
Inside a Folder
Open any folder to see:
- Breadcrumb navigation back to the root
- Visibility badge showing Public or Private
- Subfolders for nested organization
- Files displayed as grid cards or a list table
- Search to find files by name within the folder
- Drag-and-drop uploading for platform folders
File Details
Click any file to open a details panel with:
- Image preview (for supported image types)
- Editable file name
- Public URL with copy button (for files in public folders)
- File size, type, and dates
- Download and Delete options
Creating Folders
- Click New folder from the root or inside an existing folder
- Enter a folder name (e.g., “Product Images”)
- For root folders, choose the access level:
Private: Only authenticated users with the right permissions can access files
Public: Anyone with the direct URL can access files - Subfolders inherit their parent’s visibility
Uploading Files
- Open the target folder (or click Upload at root and pick a destination)
- Click Upload or drag files into an empty folder
- Select up to 10 files per batch
- Each file can be up to 50 MB
If an upload fails, you’ll see which files failed and can retry or remove them.
Note: You must create at least one folder before uploading. The Upload button is disabled at root until you have a folder.
Public vs. Private Folders
| Public | Private | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can access | Anyone with the URL | Authenticated users per your app’s rules |
| Public URL in file details | Yes | No |
| Best for | Marketing assets, open resources | User-specific or sensitive files |
Managing Files and Folders
Platform folders (yours):
- Rename file: Open file details, edit the name, save
- Delete file: Use file details or row actions, then confirm
- Delete folder: Use the folder menu to delete the folder and all its contents (this cannot be undone)
App storage (app-created buckets):
If your app creates Supabase storage buckets (for example, user avatars or uploads), they appear at the root with an “App storage” badge.
- You can browse, preview, download, and delete files
- You cannot upload, rename files, or create subfolders from the dashboard
- Changes to app storage should go through your app code to maintain data integrity
Permissions Panel
From a platform folder, click Permissions to inspect security policies. This panel shows:
- Policy names and commands (SELECT, INSERT, etc.)
- Roles and rule expressions
- Explanation of Public vs. Private folder behavior
The panel is read-only for visibility and debugging. To change access rules, ask the AI or update your app’s backend configuration.
Storage Quota
The usage bar reflects storage used by dashboard-managed files (folders you create in Studio). Your plan defines the total quota:
- Free plans: 50 MB
- Pro plans: 500 GB
If you exceed your quota during upload, the upload fails with a quota message. Remove unused files or upgrade your plan to continue.
Using Files in Your App
For public files: Copy the Public URL from the file details panel and use it directly in your app.
For private files: Your app should use Supabase Storage APIs with authentication. Ask the AI to help wire storage into your project.
FAQs
Can I move a folder to another location?
Not yet. Create a new folder and re-upload your files, or ask the AI to help migrate files in your app.
Do app user uploads count against my Files quota?
Dashboard quota applies to platform folders you create. App bucket usage may appear in the overview but is metered separately.
Is this the same as chat attachments?
No. Chat attachments are temporary files sent to the AI and stored separately. The Files tab is for persistent project assets.
Why can’t I upload to App storage folders?
App storage is owned by your running application. The dashboard lets you inspect and clean up data, but writes go through your app so file paths and security stay consistent.
What file types can I preview?
Image previews work for common image types like JPG, PNG, GIF, and WebP. SVG files and non-image files display an icon instead of a preview.
